I’ve never heard someone do justice to one of George’s songs until now. (Josh Turner)

“He Stopped Loving Her Today” is a famous country song that George Jones first recorded in 1980. The song is about a man who continues to love his former partner, even after her death. It has since become one of the most beloved and recognizable country songs.

The lyrics of “He Stopped Loving Her Today” are both poignant and eloquent. For example, there is a line that reads “He said I’ll love you till I die / She told him you’ll forget in time / As the years went slowly by / She still preyed upon his mind.” The chorus of the song delivers an emotional punch with the words, “He stopped loving her today / They placed a wreath upon his door / And soon they’ll carry him away / He stopped loving her today.”

George Jones’ performance on the original recording is unforgettable. His soulful voice perfectly captures the heartache and pain expressed in the lyrics. Jones’ rendition of the song won many awards, including two Grammys for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. Even today, “He Stopped Loving Her Today” is played regularly on classic country radio stations.

Although many artists have covered “He Stopped Loving Her Today” over the years, including Alan Jackson at George Jones’ funeral, the original recording by George Jones remains the definitive version and an outstanding masterpiece of the country music genre.
