Watch : Until now, I’ve never heard someone perform one of George’s songs properly. (Josh Turner)

” He Stopped Loving Her Today” is a timeless country tune. George Jones originally recorded it in 1980, and it tells the tale of a man who never stopped loving his ex-partner even after she passed away. The song’s lyrics are both melancholic and poetic, with lines such as “He said I’ll love you till I die / She told him you’ll forget in time / As the years went slowly by / She still preyed upon his mind.” The chorus delivers an emotional punch: “He stopped loving her today / They placed a wreath upon his door / And soon they’ll carry him away / He stopped loving her today.”

Jones’ performance on the track is legendary, with his soulful voice conveying the pain and sorrow at the heart of the song. It won several awards, including two Grammys for Best Male Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. Even today, it remains a staple of classic country radio.

Although many artists have covered “He Stopped Loving Her Today” over the years, including Alan Jackson at George Jones’ funeral, the original recording by George Jones is still the definitive version and a true masterpiece of the genre. This is the first time I’ve heard someone do justice to one of George’s songs. Good job, young man!
